Case Description
Over 6 years ago, I had the right rear molar (lower) root canaled and set with a crown. Unfortunately the root canal job was botched (apparently the dentist went in too deep with the filler "spike" thingee) and I've had minor pain all these years, having been told there was nothing for it. I've been dealing with on and off pain for years now and no one seems to be able to help me.

A couple of days ago, I started having extreme pain in that right lower rear molar. The pain has grown to the extent that my entire lower jaw is sore and tender. I've had to take Darvocet to control the now excruciating pain. The pain is so bad I've had to lay down for fear of passing out from it. At least the Darvocet is working, but the real problem that needs to be addressed is why the tooth is causing me such pain.

Unfortunately the pain started on Thursday, my doctors at UCLA can't take me until December (six weeks!) and it's now the weekend and I'm desperate to find another dentist who can help me. I am terribly phobic, also have a highly sensitised gag reflex, and therefore have needed IV sedation for any sort of dental work.

So, I'm looking for a doctor in Santa Monica who has the facilities to treat me asap-- and who also can do IV sedations as well. I hope I can get this resolved soon, because I'm reduced to a liquid diet. I can't chew and I can barely speak because of the pain.

Also my main concern is that this might be caused by some sort of infection because the area of pain has spread.

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.
