Case Description
I was recently referred to a Periodontist by my Dentist as a result of a gum infection due to periodontal disease. After the exam, it was suggested that I come back for a Deep Clean/Root Planing. However, that very procedure was done, per my dentist only 4 months ago. As a result, I'm wondering if you could clarify the following as I'm not sure how to proceed: 1) If root planing service was rendered in September 2007, is it feasible that it would need to be done again as soon as January 2008? Wouldn't it be obvious procedure was done only short time ago? 2) When procedure is done, are all four quandrants cleaned at once or are multiple appointments required as to allow for healing? In essence, I question whether or not my Dentist actually did a deep cleaning as the Periodontist told me that each quandrant is done separately as they like to allow 3 weeks in between each cleaning as to allow for healing. Please advise as I don't want to have to take cash out of pocket unnecessarily since my insurance covers this procedure only once every two years. I appreciate your time and your consideration. I can be reached via email at gmalesso@aol.com .

Are You This Patient?
When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description,
special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more
reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors.
Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.
Dear Gina,In a situation like this I recommend that you obtain a second opinion, this will involve evaluation of your x-rays and a exam by a board-certified periodontist.Afshin Salamati, DDS, MSDiplomate, American Board of Periodontologywww.DrSalamati.com(310)275-1090
